Hotel Coutettaz

Where EVERYTHING falls into place

The fire’s going. Come on in.

Imagine returning from a long day on the slopes, cold-cheeked and exhilarated, to this. A door flung open on a crackling fire; warm smiles ready to sort whatever you need, no trouble; the tell-tale tumble of a cocktail shaker, beckoning you to a well stocked bar. And – is that dinner? That smells good. You can’t unbuckle your ski boots fast enough.

Perhaps you’re not skiing, but celebrating a wedding. Or cycling – summers in Morzine really are something else. Whatever brings you to the doorstep of Hotel Coutettaz, whether in snowfall or sunshine, you can expect the same thing. Perfection.

Hotel Coutettaz is ancient and it’s beautiful. Dorrien has created one of the best small hotels in the world. We gather in candlelit rooms around real fires, for really good food and an impeccable English-speaking welcome. Evenings are a chance to share the adventures of the day and get to meet fellow guests. Bedrooms are stylish and individual. It’s got character. It’s got charm. It’s got many of us coming back again and again.”

Our ethos

French FLAIR and English reserve

All you need (and more).

At our boutique Morzine hotel, we pair exquisite beauty with understated English charm and hospitality. The place itself is stunning, with original stone walls and pristine white shutters gazing out over the surrounding mountains. And you’ll struggle to choose a room. We’ve meticulously styled each to preserve their unique characters, so expect rustic romance, indulgent fabrics, original features and beautiful bathrooms.

But what’s a place without people? Ours are exceptional, trained to take incredible care of you and yours for every moment of your stay. From the brilliant chefs who could whip up heavenly breakfasts in their sleep, to the genuinely welcoming front-of-house staff offering personalised ski itinerary advice and more, we’ll quietly go out of our way to make every visit memorable.

A five-star experience in every way. Both the property, and its setting in Morzine, are quite wonderful, and the quality of hospitality simply could not be bettered. The entire staff were all wonderfully helpful; the bedrooms beautifully appointed, and the reception and dining rooms atmospheric, and full of charm. This was quite simply one of the most pleasurable holidays I have ever experienced.”

Our heritage

HOTEL COUTETTAZ has history

So much has changed. So much will change. But even more has stayed the same.

Our original Alpine manor house is the oldest standing structure in Morzine, and has seen kings reign, wars fought and France changed and changed again.

It was constructed in 1771 during the reign of Louis XV by the original owner, Antoine Plagnat, a local Morzinoise and influential figure in Morzine’s slate mining industry. Morzine is a village built on slate, and Antoine used his mining profits to fund the original manor house. At the time, it was split in two: half for the family, and half for his herd of cattle during the winter. Don’t worry – we’ve cleaned up, and then some, since.

From Antoine, the house passed to the prominent Baud family of lawyers and solicitors which, over the following 200 years, included the mayor of the town. We can thank the Bauds for the property we love today; they added many of the rooms that now serve as bedrooms, including workshops for seamstresses, cobblers and carpenters and a traditional Mazot.

Our current owner, Dorrien Ricardo, leased the house to run as a hotel in 1993 and bought the building soon after. Since then, he has lovingly and respectfully renovated the house and grounds, carefully preserving the dark wooden beams and Morzinoise slate flooring that hint at the Hotel’s past.

A little bit of heaven in the Alps! Have visited many times and are always looked after brilliantly. Nothing is too much trouble. The staff are fabulous and the food is amazing.”

From the minute we were met to the second we were dropped back to Geneva Airport by the legendary alpine drivers, we had just the nicest time possible at Hotel Coutettaz. Every morning we were woken by the faint knock from one of the delightful chalet girls with a welcome cup of tea left outside the room. When the cobwebs of aprés ski were swept away, a glorious breakfast revitalised with talk of the day’s mountain weather, skiing agenda and fresh orange juice-a-plenty.”
