Road cycling routes around Morzine
There’s a particular sense of freedom that comes from clipping in and rolling straight from your hotel onto quiet Alpine roads. Within minutes, the bustle of the village fades away, replaced by sweeping views and the satisfying rhythm of the climb ahead.
From Hotel Coutettaz, some of the region’s most celebrated cycling routes begin right on your doorstep. Take your pick of the legendary Tour de France climbs, or ease into the day with a gentler spin through the valley before ascending one of the many mountain passes that wind into lesser-known corners of the Alps. Morzine offers an extraordinary variety of routes for half or full day adventures in the saddle, here are five of our favourites:
Col de Joux Plane
Distance: 25km return to Morzine or 55km loop via Taninges
One of the most iconic Tour de France climbs in the Alps, combining demanding gradients with spectacular views across the Grand Massif and Mont Blanc, reaching 1689m above sea level. For an enjoyable loop, roll through Taninges before making the final gentle ascent back to Morzine via Les Gets.
Col de Joux Verte via Les Lindarets
Distance: 35km loop
A scenic classic starting with a 14km ascent and plenty of switchbacks on the way to Avoriaz, before passing the turquoise waters of Lac de Montriond and the famous goat village of Les Lindarets on the way back to Morzine.
Col de la Ramaz
Distance: 58km loop
A challenging Tour de France climb rewarded with sweeping Alpine panoramas and stunning views of Mont Blanc from the summit. Along the way, you’ll ride through avalanche tunnels, past dramatic rock faces and through the quiet ski village of Sommand.
Tour de Roc d’Enfer
Distance: 75km
A 3-4 hour ride that begins with a 30km downhill section along the valley floor before you begin the climb home, tackling Col du Jambaz and Col de la Ramaz. You’ll descend through pretty Praz-de-Lys before returning to Morzine via the main route from Les Gets.

The Col de Joux Plane is the region’s most iconic climb and has featured numerous times in the Tour de France. Other popular routes include the Col de la Ramaz, Col de Joux Verte and the climb to Avoriaz. A longer ride can see you whizzing down the valley for a tour around Lake Geneva.

Even during peak season, an early start will usually reward you with quieter roads, peaceful climbs and cooler temperatures.

Mountain weather can change quickly, so it’s worth carrying layers, a lightweight waterproof jacket, sunscreen, plenty of water and snacks.
Are there cafés and restaurants along the cycling routes?
